Sustainable Pet Ownership

The word sustainability matters a lot these days, especially since humanity as a species is learning that we have a finite amount of precious resources.

But we shouldn’t stop there, we have to focus on being sustainable within every possible aspect of our lives and that includes practicing sustainable pet ownership.

“How do I practice sustainable pet ownership?” you might ask. Worry not, as we have done our research and compiled multiple aspects that should be considered in order to practice sustainable pet ownership!

1. First of All… Food!

Just like us, our beloved pet’s food choices can also impact our carbon footprint which can be detrimental to the environment in the long run.

Ensuring that your pet is eating sustainably is one of many of the most important first steps of practising sustainable pet ownership.

The importance of this lies behind the fact that the eating habits of the average cat and dog are responsible for releasing as many as 64 million tonnes of greenhouse gases annually. This is why it’s so important for pet owners to switch to sustainable pet foods.

Here at vpets, we have a selection of sustainable and vegan cat and dog foods that are proven to be beneficial for your pets.

We not only stock vegan and sustainable pet foods to promote sustainable pet ownership, but we also stock treats and supplements to keep your pets satiated and healthy! Check out our picks here for your best buds.

2. Pet Toys

Sustainable pet toys are another element of pet ownership that is often overlooked. Oftentimes, it’s second nature to just pick something off the shelf that looks like it would be fun. But, in order to practice sustainable pet ownership, we need to take that extra step and ensure that even our pet’s toys are eco-friendly!

One way to do this is to stop buying plastic pet toys and invest in sustainable pet toys that are made of durable, non-toxic and recyclable plastic. Sustainable pet toys help to cut down on the carbon pawprint left behind from the pet toys manufacturing industry.

However, if you’re more price-sensitive (which is definitely normal!), you can opt to make your own pet toys instead. The benefit here is that you can tailor them exactly to how your pet likes and they are super duper cheap!

3. Waste Disposal

The majority of dog owners pick up their dog wastes using plastic bags, this in itself does not sound too bad. But, take into consideration that a dog may go to the bathroom up to 3 times a day. This coupled with the use of plastic bags to pick up the waste equates to more than 1,000 plastic bags used for just one dog!

Here at vpets, we preach sustainable pet ownership. This is why we stock sustainable waste bags to keep up with your doggos’ business.

Admit it, sometimes when your pet does their business in public and you coincidentally forgot to bring a waste bag, we just pretend like it’s not there. It’s no secret that many pet owners do this but unfortunately, we all know this isn’t a sustainable act.

This is because whatever waste is left out will likely get washed away into a drainage system which ultimately leaks contaminants into the water supply. We don’t need to tell you why that’s bad, do we?

A simple fix to this is to keep your waste collection bags near your door or even next to your dog’s leash. So, whenever you’re looking to take your dog out for a walk, you will never forget!

4. Sustainable Showers

Showers. Your pet’s least favourite thing to do. Whilst switching to sustainable pet shampoos wouldn’t exactly make them feel thrilled about taking a shower, at least you can feel excited! You’re able to help save the planet one step at a time.

When looking for a sustainable shampoo product, try to look for non-toxic and parabens free shampoos. They are more likely to be sustainable and as a bonus, they’re going to be more beneficial for your pet’s skin as well.

But just to be safe, it is always best to check with your vet to see if the shampoo is suitable to be used for your pet’s skin.

At vpets, we stock sustainable shampoos for both your dogs and cats.

The Bottom Line

Practising sustainable pet ownership is necessary especially in this generation as sustainable practices and products are becoming more and more important. We not only have to think about minimizing our carbon footprints but also our pet’s carbon pawprints!

We’ll provide sustainable products, but it’s up to you to practice sustainable pet ownership.
